Email Offers for Painters and Fencers: Win Repeat Work Without Discounting Into the Ground

Painters and fencers have more seasonal repeat and referral opportunities than almost any other trade. The work is visible, the triggers are consistent, and past clients are warm leads. Here are email templates and a simple system for bringing them back — without training them to expect a discount every time they book.

If you painted someone's house in 2022, they will need it painted again in 2025–2027. If you built their fence, their neighbour saw it. These are warm opportunities that most painters and fencers never follow up because they never built a system to.

A quarterly email to your past client list takes 30 minutes to write and can generate 5–10 bookings per campaign — without a single dollar in advertising spend.

Painter Email Templates

Template 1: Pre-summer exterior season (October/November NZ)

Subject: “Exterior painting season — are you on the list?”

Body: “Hey [Name], [Your name] from [Business] here. We're booking up for exterior paint jobs before Christmas — [suburb] and surrounds. If your exterior is due for a refresh or you've been thinking about it, reply here and I'll get you in the queue. Slots are limited but I always try to fit in past clients first. Cheers”

Template 2: Interior winter offer (June/July)

Subject: “Interior painting — winter is the right time”

Body: “Hi [Name], [Your name] here. Funny thing about painting — interior work is actually best done in winter when there's no risk of direct sun on fresh exterior paint. We've got some availability in [month] for interior jobs. Living room, bedroom, or a full house repaint — happy to quote. Reply here or call [phone]. Cheers”

Template 3: Referral incentive (any season)

Subject: “Know anyone thinking about painting?”

Body: “Hey [Name], [Your name] from [Business] here. Quick one — if you know anyone looking to get painting done (interior or exterior), I'd really appreciate the referral. I'll give them $150 off their quote as a thank you from you. Just get them to mention your name when they call. Cheers”

Fencer Email Templates

Template 1: Storm damage follow-up

Subject: “[Your area] — storm damage fencing?”

Body: “Hi [Name], [Your name] from [Business] here — we built your fence back in [year]. With the recent weather, a few fences in [area] have taken some damage. Just reaching out to our past clients first before booking out — if yours needs attention, reply here and I'll come take a look. No charge for the inspection. Cheers”

Template 2: Pre-sale fence refresh

Subject: “Selling? Fencing makes a difference”

Body: “Hey [Name], just checking in — if you're thinking about selling your place, a clean fence makes a bigger first impression than most people realise. We do quick turnaround repairs and replacement for pre-sale work. Happy to quote fast if you're on a timeline. Cheers, [Your name]”

What Not to Do

Do not send a generic "we're busy — just checking in!" email with no offer and no reason to act. It wastes your list's attention without giving them a reason to engage. Every email should have a specific hook — a season, an event, a service, a reason why now.

And do not make every email a discount. Mix in value emails — a tip about when to repaint (look for cracking or peeling near window frames), or a note about what makes a good fence post installation — so your list trusts you as an expert before you make an offer.
