How to Create a Tradie Website That Gets More Job Bookings

A tradie website that generates job bookings is built around conversion, not aesthetics. Fast mobile load speed, click-to-call above the fold, service pages for each trade and area, local SEO in headings, and schema markup are the foundations. Here is the complete checklist for NZ tradies building or rebuilding their website to win more work.

Most tradie websites are built by someone who cares about how it looks. Few are built by someone who cares about how many jobs it generates. The difference shows up in the enquiry count — and the gap between the two is significant.

This is a checklist. Every item on it affects either how Google ranks your site or how many visitors convert to enquiries.

Step 1: Mobile Speed First

Test your current website on Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). Enter your URL and check the mobile score. Under 50 is a problem. Under 70 is acceptable. Over 85 is good.

Fixes for a slow mobile site: compress images to WebP format, remove unused plugins and scripts, and use a hosting provider with good NZ latency. If your website loads in more than 3 seconds on a phone, you are losing enquiries before the page has finished loading.

Step 2: Click-to-Call Above the Fold

Your phone number should be visible as soon as someone opens your website on mobile — before they scroll. It should be a clickable link (tel: format) so they tap and dial directly. A phone number buried in the footer, or worse, listed as an image that cannot be tapped, loses enquiries every day.

Step 3: Separate Service Pages

Every distinct service gets its own page. "Switchboard upgrades." "Heat pump wiring." "Residential rewiring." Each page title includes the service and your city: "Switchboard Upgrades Auckland | Licensed Electrician."

This is how you rank for specific job-type searches, not just generic "electrician Auckland" searches. A homeowner searching "switchboard upgrade cost NZ" finds your service page. A homeowner searching "electrician" finds your homepage. You want both.

Step 4: Local SEO in Every Title and Heading

Your homepage title: "[Trade] [City] | [Business Name] — Licensed [Trade] in [City]". Your H1: "Licensed Electrician in Auckland — Get a Same-Day Quote." Every service page title: "[Service] [City] | [Business Name]."

Include your suburb and neighbouring suburbs in your business description and footer. If you serve the North Shore, Rodney, and West Auckland, name those explicitly — do not just say "Auckland and surrounding areas."

Step 5: Schema Markup

Add LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema to your homepage and a Service schema to each service page. This takes 30 minutes for a developer and tells Google exactly what your business is and what it does. Use Google's Rich Results Test to verify it is implemented correctly after adding.

Step 6: Google Review Integration

Display your Google reviews on your website — either a review widget or a simple star rating with a "See our Google reviews" link. This social proof increases conversion rates significantly and reinforces the trust signals that Google reads from your GBP.

Step 7: Contact Form With Confirmation

Your contact form should confirm submission immediately — both on the page and via an automated email to the enquirer. “Thanks for reaching out — we'll call you within the hour.” This sets a response time expectation and reduces the chance they contact a competitor while waiting.
